"In Good Company: Demuth Invitational" at the Demuth Museum, April 5 -June 15, 2025

Feast of the Giglio, Brooklyn, NY, 1999 © Robert Forlini

I will be showing my photograph, Feast of the Giglio, Brooklyn, NY, 1999, in an exhibition entitled In Good Company: Demuth Invitational at the Demuth Museum in Lancaster, PA from April 5-June 15, 2025. Community played a central role in Charles Demuth’s life. His social network extended far beyond Lancaster County to the most prominent and celebrated voices in the avant-garde artistic circles of the early twentieth century. From crowded underground jazz clubs to portraits, both formal and in his poster portrait style, Demuth often portrayed his friends in his work.
The photograph, from my series La Festa: Italian Festivals in America, shows a group of “lifters” from the annual Feast of the Giglio in Brooklyn, NY. The men depicted are part of a group of approximately 120 to 180 men who lift and “dance” a massive tower 7 stories high and weighing 4 tons through the streets of Williamsburg. This activity demands great strength, coordination, teamwork and trust among the members of the community.
The Opening Reception will be on Friday April 4 from 5:00-8:00 PM.

  • The Demuth Museum is located at 120 East King St., Lancaster, PA 17602

Demuth Invitational: "Still Life" at the Demuth Museum, May 25 -July 21, 2024

Statuary, Newburgh NY, 2012 © Robert Forlini

I will be showing my photograph, Statuary, Newburgh NY, 2012, in an exhibition entitled Demuth Invitational: Still Life at the Demuth Museum in Lancaster, PA from May 25-July 21, 2024. Some of Charles Demuth’s most intriguing and beloved works are watercolors featuring vegetables and fruits that highlight the abundance of Lancaster County’s farms. In 2023, the Demuth Foundation received a major acquisition of a double-sided watercolor c. 1925 of apples with peaches and plums on verso. They have invited local artists to reflect on this work and other produce still lifes by Demuth to inspire new work through their perspective and style.

My approach to “still life” is my approach to any photographic subject matter: the joy in discovering a found scenario and creating new meaning through deliberate framing. In this picture, the statue of Jesus seems to be preaching to us, the viewer, while an eclectic audience of various human and animal figures look on, their reactions ranging from attentive to distracted. The desolate landscape in the background forms a gulf between Jesus and his flock, while the cyclone fence simultaneously separates, connects and confines them. Although these figures are ordinary, everyday objects, the photograph transforms them into an allegory.

The Opening Reception will be on Friday May 24 from 5:00-8:00 PM.

  • The Demuth Museum is located at 120 East King St., Lancaster, PA 17602
  • Museum hours are Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat: 10-4; Sun 12-4. Closed Mon. & Wed.
  • The museum may be contacted at (717) 299-9940, or visit demuth.org
  • There will be an Opening Reception on Friday May 24 from 5:00-8:00 PM.
  • The exhibition will run from May 25-July 21, 2024.

I will be showing my photograph, Hugo, Lancaster PA, 2022, in an exhibition entitled Demuth Invitational: Portraiture through Artists' Eyes at the Demuth Museum in Lancaster, PA from April 29-June 25, 2023. Like many artists, throughout his lifetime Charles Demuth explored portraiture. His subjects ranged widely from friends and family to fictional characters in his literary illustrations, and his style included representational works and his pioneering poster portraits conveying likenesses in an abstract concept.  I will be showing my photograph, Man with Stroller, NYC, 2021 in an exhibition entitled The Streets at Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota from April 16-30, 2022. From Exhibition Juror Sarah Weiss:

"Street Photography became recognized as a genre in its own right during the early 1930s. Street Photography is unique in the way it is associated with the photographer's skill in capturing something of the mystery and aura of everyday city living. The Street Photographer is then often likened to the historical figure of the flâneur: namely someone who mingles anonymously amongst the crowd observing and recording the ways the unsuspecting city dweller interacts with his or her environment"

"When Darkness Falls" Exhibition at Front Street Gallery, October 12- November 17, 2018

St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, 2002, © Robert Forlini

I will be showing my photograph, "St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City"in a group exhibition entitled "When Darkness Falls" at Front Street Gallery in Patterson, NY from October 12-November 17, 2018. From "When Darkness Falls" curator: "There are different kinds of darkness. There is the darkness behind your eyes. The darkness of the coming night. There is darkness that frightens. There are blessings in darkness--without it, one could not see the stars. Darkness can be soothing, when the sky tones down its colors and the sky seems to expand.

"There is darkness inside all of us, in our thoughts, in our actions or our words. What is it about darkness that scares us? Or that helps us grow when we experience a hurtful event in the depth of our soul? What is it that makes us feel restful or restless when we enter sleep? We all have a part of our soul damaged by the trials of dark experiences. We are what we are because of it.

"Is the darkness inside unconscious?  How do we understand darkness?  Something solid and real, so much more than a simple absence of light.  Or is it a creature that touches your skin, slipping into your breath to hide unseen, gliding through our thoughts like an unwelcome passenger."
It's always night, or we wouldn't need light.
-- Thelonious Monk

"FAMILY", Photography Exhibition at Umbrella Arts in NYC, February 2-March 4, 2017.

Central Park, NYC, 1984, © Robert Forlini

I will be showing my photograph Central Park, NYC in a group exhibition entitled FAMILY at Umbrella Arts Gallery on New York's Lower East Side from February 2-March 4, 2017. FAMILY is defined as a group of people who are related to each other. This exhibition looks to expand that definition beyond what we are born into, including those who we choose to “adopt” as a family (such as a close group of friends), a group of people united by certain convictions or a common affiliation, or a group of things related by common characteristics. The Opening Reception will be on Thursday February 2 from 6-8 pm. The show was curated by photographer Harvey Stein. A book based on the exhibited images for FAMILY will be published by the gallery and will be for sale during the exhibition.

Happy or unhappy, families are all mysterious. We have only to imagine how differently we would be described and will be, after our deaths, by each of the family members who believe they know us.--Gloria Steinem
